The use of mobile phones as a tool for purchasing physical goods and services continues to advance in Brazil. In three years, the proportion of Brazilian Internet users who have tried the so-called mobile commerce grew by 20 percentage points, jumping from 62% in March 2016 to 82% now in March 2019.
The information comes from the new edition of the Panorama Mobile Time / Opinion Box survey on mobile commerce in Brazil. Clothing, consumer electronics and meals continue to be the most purchased product categories via app in Brazil.
The penetration of m-commerce is higher among Brazilians with higher income, reaching 90% in classes A and B, while 79% in classes C, D and E. The social difference also appears when mobile consumers are asked who made in-app purchases in the last 30 days: 76% in classes A and B, compared to 65% in classes C, D, and E.
For many lower income people, the mobile phone is the only tool for shopping online. The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, IBGE, reports that the penetration of smartphones is greater than that of computers in Brazilian homes. And even when a poor family owns a computer, it is not necessarily connected to the Internet because of the limited coverage of wired networks and the high price of broadband access.
This is reflected when this survey asks mobile consumers if they make more purchases from their smartphone or desktop. In the national average, 71% buy more for the smartphone. However, the proportion is higher among those in classes C, D and E (74%) than among those in classes A and B (62%).
In the same question, a regional difference is perceived. Smartphone preference is lower in the Southeast (67%), where there is greater access to fixed broadband, than in the Midwest (77%), Northeast (76%), North (73%) and South (73%). .
